Customer Objectives
In 2015, managers at Amadori’s flagship poultry processing plant in Cesena, Italy, planned to increase efficiency by adding automation to their packaging lines. The upgraded system would need high-capacity sorters to handle the throughput of 60 boxes per minutes (bpm). The plant typically used pop-up sorters for similar applications, but they required substantial time and resources to keep operational. Plus, occasional product jams could disrupt sorter synchronization and package counting, leading to unplanned downtime. Given those drawbacks—and anticipating greater volume in the years to come—the plant’s preferred OEM connected with Intralox to develop a solution.
Intralox Execution
We recommended our Activated Roller Belt (ARB) Sorter S400 with 60-degree angled rollers. Patented Intralox ARB technology handles high throughputs accurately and reliably with less required maintenance, making it ideal for Amadori’s short- and long-term needs.
The OEM built the conveyor system, connecting the case erectors, sorters, and packaging lines. With a belt speed of approximately 197 ft (60 m) per minute, the new sorter achieved the desired throughput immediately. It handled Amadori’s empty, paraffin-coated cardboard boxes with no slippage or impact on performance. And because ARB equipment doesn’t require guarding, it’s easy to access and safer for workers.
Compared to other sorting systems we use, the ARB Sorter is far simpler and more reliable. Maintenance is minimal and performance has been consistently excellent. We’re confident in its long term value.

Results
Since its installation, our ARB 60-Degree Sorter S400 has performed flawlessly. That’s over a decade of operation—two shifts per day, 6 days a week, year-round—with no output errors, jams, unplanned downtime, or component replacements.
Compared to the facility’s other sorting systems, our ARB Sorter requires 92% less planned maintenance time and has eliminated unplanned maintenance. Dust accumulation is easily managed with a monthly, 30-minute dry cleaning to remove buildup.
The sorter’s modular design has recently allowed Amadori to add line output with no impact on performance. An additional exit is planned to serve a new cutting hall. This record of consistent performance demonstrates our technology’s flexibility and scalability for future expansions.
