East Balt Bakeries Eliminate Contamination Risks and Radically Extend Belt Service Life with Intralox ThermoDrive® Technology

“Knowing of the success that Aix-en-Provence had with the ThermoDrive technology minimized the risk for us. After analyzing those results and seeing the improvements it’s already delivered to our plant…we know that ThermoDrive is the right solution for us.”

Background
East Balt bakeries
produce buns, bagels, biscuits, English muffins, tortillas, and other breads that are sold globally on four continents. Two of the company’s twenty bakeries are located in France—in Aix-en-Provence and Fleury-Merogis.

Challenge
The plant in Fleury-Merogis produces over two million buns per day on two lines to supply 1,000 QSRs (Quick Service Restaurant) in France. While several conveyors on the line were recently upgraded with Intralox technology to optimize performance, the inclines at the outfeed of the dough mixers were causing maintenance and sanitation issues.

The inclines were equipped with flat belts with a textile base. The high water absorption dough was difficult to clean effectively from the surface of these belts, and the belt edges quickly became damaged due to frequent mistracking. The plant had to replace the flat belts regularly every two months.

Solution
Intralox specialists proposed a solution to optimize the incline application by installing ThermoDrive® technology. While this technology was new for the Fleury-Merogis plant, the new East Balt plant in Aix-en-Provence had recently installed it with great success. Trusting in Intralox’s expertise in bakery conveying solutions, East Balt forged ahead with the ThermoDrive installation with the projected goal of zero contamination risk from belt edge damage.

Results
After one year of operation, the ThermoDrive belts have not required replacement yet. ThermoDrive technology has delivered the results the plant needed: better tracking and no edge damage, less maintenance, easier sanitation, and the risk of product contamination reduced to nothing.

“Knowing of the success that Aix-en-Provence had with the ThermoDrive technology minimized the risk for us. After analyzing those results and seeing the improvements it’s already delivered to our plant…we know that ThermoDrive is the right solution for us,” said Mr. Lagarde, the Fleury-Merogis plant manager.
